Delivered on Lord Balarāma's appearance day, this lecture explores Balarāma's role as Kṛṣṇa's first expansion and the supreme servitor who enthusiastically pleases the Lord across all five devotional relationships. It describes his distinct qualities, his intimate pastimes with the residents of Vṛndāvana, and his position as the original spiritual master represented by Śrīla Prabhupāda.

So, the next śloka of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, the famous śloka which is describing the qualities of a sādhu:
titikṣavaḥ kāruṇikāḥ suhṛdaḥ sarva-dehinām ajāta-śatravaḥ śāntāḥ sādhavaḥ sādhu-bhūṣaṇāḥ. So, the symptoms of a sādhu is titikṣavaḥ, that's the first symptom, that means tolerant. And kāruṇikāḥ, merciful. Śrīla Prabhupāda is a very good example of being tolerant and kāruṇikāḥ, merciful. He was tolerating throughout his life so many difficulties. And kāruṇikāḥ, always thinking of the welfare of others. Suhṛdaḥ sarva-dehinām: a friend to all living entities. That's a sādhu, a real friend of everyone. Not only some, but of everyone, well-wisher to all. Ajāta-śatravaḥ: they don't have any enemies. Śāntāḥ: and sādhavaḥ, by the scriptures, always taking shelter of the śāstras. And sādhu-bhūṣaṇāḥ, and all these characteristics are of a sādhu. So, that is a sādhu. And we are so fortunate we have Śrīla Prabhupāda as our founder-ācārya, and he is the example, practical example, we can see. We can read about Śrīla Prabhupāda, hear about Śrīla Prabhupāda, his practical activities, not only in books, but the witnesses from his disciples and those who came in contact with him, shows his sādhu, worth taking shelter of. So, today is Lord Balarāma's, Balarāma's appearance day, and I thought to read also a short śloka from Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 5.4:
sarva-avatārī kṛṣṇa svayaṁ bhagavān
tāṅhāra dvitīya deha śrī-balarāma

Translation: The supreme personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, is the fountainhead of all incarnations, and Balarāma is His second body. Please repeat: The supreme personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa,
(Audience repeats: The supreme personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa,)
is the fountainhead of all incarnations,
(Audience repeats: is the fountainhead of all incarnations,)
and Balarāma is His second body. (Audience repeats: and Balarāma is His second body.)

There is a short purport to this: Lord Kṛṣṇa, the absolute personality of Godhead, is the prime lord, the original form of Godhead, and His first expansion is Śrī Balarāma. The personality of Godhead can expand Himself in innumerable forms. The forms that have unlimited potencies are called svāṁśa, and the forms that have limited potencies, the living entities, are called vibhinnāṁśa. So, we are very fortunate we can celebrate Lord Balarāma's appearance day in association of devotees in this holy dhāma, in Almvik, and it's such a beautiful function today in association of devotees. And sādhu-saṅga, sādhu-saṅga, sarva-śāstre kaya / lava-mātra sādhu-saṅge sarva-siddhi haya. So, the importance of association with devotees is emphasized again and again. We can attain perfection. So, Vasudeva, he asked, after the, he performed a priest, Garga Muni, to visit Nanda Mahārāja, yes, after the appearance of Lord Balarāma. And Vasudeva was eager to know about the astrological calculations for both Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma. And Garga Muni was indeed a very qualified astrologer. So, he came there to Nanda, and Nanda Mahārāja received him with great happiness and respect. So, Garga Muni is a great saintly sage, and of, on the, of other, of many of the, he was the priest of the Yadu dynasty, very special position. So, he gave three names to Lord Balarāma. First name was Rāma, and he said he would be very pleasing to his family members and the relatives and the friends, and therefore he is called Rāma. And then he said that in the future, Rāma or Balarāma would be extraordinary strong, and therefore He will be called Balabhadra. And then the third name, because of His and of your family and the family of Yadus are intimately connected, they are attracted to each other very, in a close relationship, His name will also be Saṅkarṣaṇa. Saṅkarṣaṇa means one who draw together, or one who attracts. That's Saṅkarṣaṇa. And also because He will be attracted to be transferred from Devakī's womb to Rohiṇī's womb, so He will also because of this, because of this attraction for coming to Rohiṇī's womb, He will also be named Saṅkarṣaṇa. So, Balarāma, Saṅkarṣaṇa, and Baladeva. So, as we know, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the supreme personality of Godhead, the absolute truth. So, His first expansion is Lord Balarāma. So, the supreme personality of Godhead can expand Himself in innumerable forms, unlimited forms. So, here is something short about how Balarāma looks like, He is all-attractive, also like Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa is like a dark rain cloud, Śyāmasundara. And Balarāma is like the radiant moon. Have you saw this morning or night, a brilliant full moon? So, they are two brothers appearing in different forms. So, something about His complexion: Lord Balarāma's complexion is white or fair, like crystal or like moonlight. Crystal or moonlight. And something about His clothing: He always has beautiful blue garments. And something about His hair: dark and curly hair, most beautiful. And He has lotus eyes, most beautiful. And His body is exceptionally strong and powerful. And then He has ornaments: different ornaments like jewels, decorated also with flowers in different parts of His body, and beautiful flower garland. And then He has two weapons. Do you know which weapons Lord Balarāma has? Audience: Plough. Plough. Audience: Mace. Mace, yes. So, plough, hala, and club, gadā. So, Balarāma is unique in many, in different ways. Something I want to mention shortly about that is, actually, Balarāma's personality is present in all the five primary rasas. He take intimate part in all the five primary rasas. So, this is His unique... Then, in śānta-rasa, He expands Himself to create Kṛṣṇa's abode. So, it's His enthusiasm to serve Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa is the supreme enjoyer, and Balarāma is the supreme servitor, He is the perfect servant, and He is very, very enthusiastic always to assist Kṛṣṇa in pleasing Kṛṣṇa. Also when Rāma appeared, Lakṣmaṇa is Balarāma in that līlā, and Lakṣmaṇa was always, when they were in the forest, Lakṣmaṇa was always taking so much austerities just to make sure His Rāma was comfortable and safe in each and every situation. So, Balarāma, He was making the hut, when they were walking on the ways in the jungle, He was clearing the path, that there was sharp stones and different, different uncomfortable situations, He was always there making sure that they were comfortable. And in the night, He was always fully engaged in service. In the night, He was not sleeping, He was guarding Śrī Rāma. So, this is the mood of Balarāma. So, He expand Himself as, for instance, Kṛṣṇa's crown, His flute, His sandals or His slippers, His clothes, His ornaments, it's all Balarāma. It's not different from Balarāma. He expand Himself by His energy to serve Kṛṣṇa in this way, His dhoti. So, He just, He only want to give Kṛṣṇa pleasure. So, this is Balarāma. And He assist Kṛṣṇa to attract the heart of all others. So, this is how Balarāma appears in śānta-rasa. And then, yes, this is a quote, one gopī told her friend: The highest perfection of the eyes is to see Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma entering the forest and playing their flutes and tending the cows with their friends. So, that is the highest perfection of the eyes, to see Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma entering the forest and playing the flutes and tending the cows. So then, dāsya-rasa, actually, everything Balarāma does, it's, as we spoken about, is service of... So, in sakhya-rasa, He appears as Kṛṣṇa's friend, and engaging with Kṛṣṇa in that way, they play together in the forest, hot during the day, they are with the friends, so Balarāma is also engaged in serving Kṛṣṇa by playing with Him, they are wrestling, for instance, they herd the cows, sometimes Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa arguing, and that is pleasing to Kṛṣṇa, so Balarāma is arguing with Kṛṣṇa, and sometimes they fight, they fight, and that is pleasing to Kṛṣṇa, so Balarāma does whatever He can for Kṛṣṇa's pleasure, just to give the Lord service. And then, vātsalya-rasa, as parent, because He is the elder brother, so He takes that position in His and Kṛṣṇa's relationship. For instance, sometimes He say, 'Kṛṣṇa, it's late, time to go home.' So, He is like taking that position as a parent. 'Kṛṣṇa, it's time to wake up.' Like parent wake up the child. 'Kṛṣṇa, you got to wash yourself, wake up and get dressed.' And sometimes when they are in the forest, there are dangers because there are demons appearing every day, so when there are dangers, Balarāma is also protective. So, He is always thinking about Kṛṣṇa's welfare as a parent or older brother. So, that's the mood of Balarāma in vātsalya-rasa. And then, mādhurya-rasa, it's very interesting that Balarāma, because of Balarāma's great enthusiasm to serve, He want to take part also in mādhurya-rasa, to assist Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa's pastimes like that in conjugal love. So, Balarāma, as Balarāma, cannot take part in that līlā. It would become, Śrīla Prabhupāda said, it would become embarrassing if Kṛṣṇa is dancing with the gopīs and then Balarāma would appear, it would be embarrassing for, for Kṛṣṇa. So, from a material point of view, if you have a boyfriend and girlfriend, you don't want the parents to hang around, you want to have more private, free experience and that relationship. So Balarāma, He doesn't want to create this uncomfortable situation for Kṛṣṇa when He is dancing with the gopīs. So, what does He do? He, in a very clever way, is appearing as Anaṅga Mañjarī. Who is Anaṅga Mañjarī? Audience: Rādhārāṇī's sister. Yes, Rādhārāṇī's younger sister. So, He is coming very, very close to Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī as Her younger sister, she is serving everything to Her. And as the younger sister, Balarāma as Anaṅga Mañjarī is all the time trying to arrange meetings with Kṛṣṇa, try to assist in different ways. So, Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa relationship is the peak in, in all rasas. So, in this way, Balarāma also assist in this most intimate love affairs between Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. So, they live together, Anaṅga Mañjarī and Rādhārāṇī, in the same house, and Anaṅga Mañjarī is constantly playing with Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī and Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī is reading her mind. So, Rādhārāṇī and Anaṅga Mañjarī... so, in this way, Balarāma has this unique position of being present everywhere in all rasas, and that is because of His great enthusiasm to make Kṛṣṇa happy, to serve like that. And we can see it, the spiritual master is the representative of Balarāma. Balarāma is the original guru. And so we can see in Śrīla Prabhupāda, as a perfect representative of this, of Balarāma. How he was just, he got simple instruction from his spiritual master, Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī, 'go to the Western countries to english-speaking people.' And how much he expanded that on that order. How he was just, he got order also that if you get money, print books. So, how he expanded, because of enthusiasm to please his guru. That's the mood of Balarāma. How he founded Bhaktivedanta Book Trust to publish all the books. And we see Prabhupāda's pure enthusiasm, as a representative of Balarāma, is just expanding more and more, all the books which are published and printed more and more, Balarāma's enthusiasm of Śrīla Prabhupāda, as a representative of Balarāma, of Nityānanda Prabhu. And Prabhupāda, he had only this philosophy, to engage the devotees in the devotional service, in devotion. Such a wonderful creation of Prabhupāda, ISKCON, that we are devotees, all round the world. Prabhupāda, in a short time, in so many places, in so many temples, and taught the devotees, and in such a way, we are very, very eager and enthusiastic to perform this devotional service, and prasādam distribution, and the farm project, agricultural, and, culture, artistic, so, it's, it's just manifestation of Prabhupāda's enthusiasm, which is Balarāma's enthusiasm to, to glorify the Lord like this. So, in this way, Prabhupāda, we can see, is a perfect representative of Balarāma. And devotees, in different degrees, can reflect that mercy if we become enthusiastic in our areas, engage others, that's the mood of Balarāma. Not only to engage ourselves, but to make others enthusiastic. Like now, we are so rehearsed for a play on Sunday, theater play. So, it's, that's the mood of Balarāma, to involve each other, and so Balarāma can be served. Lord Balarāma in this way. And and it in turn will contain us. So, He is all-attractive person in this material world. You know how, first expansion is Baladeva. And then from Balarāma, we have the catur-vyūha, the four expansions: Vāsudeva, Saṅkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha. So, from Saṅkarṣaṇa, Nārāyaṇa is expanded. So, that's also Balarāma. And from Nārāyaṇa, the second catur-vyūha is manifested. And from that second Saṅkarṣaṇa, the puruṣa-avatāras are manifested: Kāraṇodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu. So, this is how Balarāma is just, by His enthusiasm in this material world, He is expanding Himself in this to assist the Lord, and that Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu is within our hearts. That's Balarāma, He is here, in our hearts. And He is present everywhere in every atom. So, just for the service of the Lord. So, this is something to meditate upon of how Lord Balarāma is expanding in this material world. And then in the end, I wanted to mention shortly about when Lord Balarāma visited Vṛndāvana, many years after Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma left Vṛndāvana. Something like 15-20 years after they left. They left, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, so they left Vṛndāvana and they were in Mathurā. And then, Balarāma had a great, very strong desire, He wanted to see His parents, Nanda and Yaśodā, and all the friends and so on. So, it's described in this chapter 65 in the Kṛṣṇa book, Lord Balarāma visits Vṛndāvana. So, He came there with great enthusiasm in His chariot. And so, at this time, all the gopas and gopīs, they have been, they have been married, they have families, and so on. But immediately, when Balarāma entered Vṛndāvana, they all gathered around Him, and they embraced everyone. So, they, and then Yaśodā, Yaśodā and Nanda Mahārāja, they offered, Yaśodā and Nanda Mahārāja, they offered blessings to Lord Balarāma. And He was so happy to see His parents. And the parents, they offered blessings to Lord Balarāma. So, it's interesting that they addressed Balarāma as Jagad-īśvara, means Lord of the universe. So, they had some understanding that He is actually the supreme personality of Godhead, but the mood of love as parents is dominating in their relationships, they also forget it very quickly, so they took Balarāma on their lap and they were crying tears, and they were just full of, overwhelmed with love for Balarāma, but at the same time addressing Him as Jagad-īśvara, Lord of the universe. So, they both know He is supreme incarnation, but also they forget it and just being absorbed in love as parents, that is dominating. Q: How is it thinking, when Balarāma serves Kṛṣṇa, is He serving Himself? A: Yes, He is serving Himself. Because He is not different from Kṛṣṇa. He is the supreme personality of Godhead, but because for the enjoyment of the Lord, just like Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī is also His expansion from Kṛṣṇa, so because of, for the sake of enjoyment, the Lord is expanding Himself. So, they are not different, but at the same time, they are also different. Because there is a special rasa, rasa experienced in this relationship. So, they are both one and also different. Someone wants to comment more on that? A: So, that is the most pleasurable thing, that's the rasa, the relationships. I heard a class yesterday that, because the lack of relationships in this material world, we are always seeking the substitutes of different other kinds of sense gratification. But actually, we need nothing more than loving relationship to the Lord. We will be completely, completely satisfied, completely. Nothing is needed with this relationship. So, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, they enjoy this relationship to the highest degree. They have everything, but they, they want that relationship with everyone, even with us, small, small, insignificant parts, They want that, to relish that relationship, that rasa. Q: And Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana, Yaśodā and Nanda, they didn't see Him as Kṛṣṇa, is that so? They didn't have this, but they did have this vātsalya-rasa. But how is it with Balarāma, because He had, indeed, Rohiṇī as His mother, and Vasudeva? Because now you were speaking like Balarāma went to see His parents, Nanda and Yaśodā. A: Yes. Rohiṇī was staying with Nanda and Yaśodā in Gokula, and Yaśodā was also Balarāma's mother, and Nanda Mahārāja was also Balarāma's father. And He was so happy to see His parents. And Vasudeva, He is not mentioned in that chapter in the Kṛṣṇa book, but of course, Rohiṇī was staying with Nanda and Yaśodā in Gokula, so Yaśodā was also Balarāma's mother and Nanda Mahārāja was also Balarāma's father. And He was so happy to see His parents. And, it's nice to see the etiquette, Vaiṣṇava etiquette, that Balarāma showed. There is a Bengali verse: vaiṣṇavācāra vaiṣṇavera bhūṣaṇa. Vaiṣṇava etiquette or behavior is the ornament of the devotee. It's ornament to relate to others in a, in a attractive. Śrīla Prabhupāda was expert in Vaiṣṇava etiquette, he knew how to relate to everyone in a very perfect way, and that's very, very attractive. So, for instance, He, Balarāma, He offered obeisances to the elder, elder cowherd men. And the younger ones, they offered obeisances to Balarāma. And He accepted that. And according to age, and according to different feelings, friendship or relationship, He was, He was showing etiquette. Sometimes He shook hands with devotees and with those who were equals. So, then they were, after this, so they were gathering around Balarāma, tight, tight, like a circle around Him. And they were just so eager to hear about, they were so eager, Nanda and Yaśodā, to hear about what, Kṛṣṇa was doing, and Balarāma was also eager to hear about their welfare of the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana. So, they asked many, many questions. So, as we know, the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana, they, they sacrificed everything for Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma. They never had any desire for something for their own sense gratification. They didn't want to go to Svargaloka, no interest at all. No interest in merging into Brahman. They just wanted to serve Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma. They had no interest in enjoying material plants, although they had, they were quite opulent in Vṛndāvana, it's described, by, by many, by opulences because of good economy. So, they were very, very satisfied with simple life, as cowherd, as was to be in Vṛndāvana like this, and serve Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma in this mood. So, that was Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, that's all. The inhabitants of Vṛndāvana's mood. So, when they addressed Kṛṣṇa or when they addressed Balarāma, their voices faltered with supreme, because of this intense feelings they had for Him. And then, it's explained how the gopīs arrived. And that, I just want to mention shortly about that. So, when the gopīs arrived, Balarāma just glanced over them with so much love. And the gopīs, of course, they were overwhelmed with joy. They were directly speaking about or asking about Kṛṣṇa's welfare. They asked, specifically, if Kṛṣṇa enjoyed His life in Dvārakā. They said, surrounded by enlightened, intelligent women, is He happy like that? Does He remember His mother and father anytime? Or does He, maybe, remember us gopīs? So, they were asking these very intimate questions. So, they said that Kṛṣṇa may have forgotten us. We can understand, He is not so eager for us anymore, He has such a nice life there in Dvārakā. But we, we remember Him always. We, every day, the gopīs, they are collecting flowers and they make beautiful, beautiful, beautiful garlands, and they were just asking, 'Balarāma, cannot Kṛṣṇa come back just for a short visit so we can offer these garlands to Kṛṣṇa?' So, in this way, they were just expressing their feelings to Balarāma. So, they said that they gave up everything for Kṛṣṇa's friendship, for His service. And then they said, even a great, when a person is in great distress, one cannot give up attachment to family members in this world. This attachment for family life is very, very strong. But they said, 'We, we renounced everything for Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma.' And now they express that Kṛṣṇa, He, He does not care. Suddenly, He just renounced us, and He just went away. So, now they express that feeling. And they said that Kṛṣṇa, He was so clever. He spoke to us in like, very nice words, beautiful words. Kṛṣṇa said, 'My dear gopīs, the service you have rendered Me is impossible for Me to repay.' From Kṛṣṇa's point of view, that's what He actually felt. But the gopīs felt in this mood, they felt cheated. Cheated, yeah, by His so nice words. And they said that now we understand His sweet words were simply for cheating us. So, it goes on and goes on, it's very wonderful chapter. The different gopīs, they are expressing, revealing their hearts, and, they are village girls, Kṛṣṇa could easily cheat us, but what about the women in Dvārakā? We would be surprised if they also get cheated like this by Kṛṣṇa. So, it's a long conversation. But I can just end with that, Balarāma stayed for two months in Vṛndāvana. And during this time, He was also in the evenings meeting with the gopīs, and they had rasa, rasa dance. Rasa-līlā during this two months. So, it was spring time, it was in, somewhere around March, May, so it was very pleasing atmosphere. And then, Varuṇa, the lord of the, the demigod of water, he sent Varuṇī, his daughter. And she appeared in the form of honey, liquid honey. And it was filled in the forest, in the holes in the trees, full of this Varuṇī. And this Varuṇī beverage, the smell was so wonderful. So, they were so attracted to that, the gopīs and Balarāma and the residents, and then they started to drink Varuṇī together. And they were, of course, so, tasty for them, and Balarāma seems to become intoxicated by this Varuṇī, His eyes were like rolling. And He was, but He was so happy, He was singing and the gopīs were so happy. So, then, He wanted to have some swimming in the Yamunā, He ordered Yamunā, 'Come here, I want to enjoy in your water.' But Yamunā thought, 'He is, He became wild,' and she didn't understand who Balarāma was. So, she thought, 'This is not proper, He is, He is in His drunk state, so why should I follow His order?' And then Balarāma became very angry. And He raised His voice, and He said that, 'If you don't come here immediately, I will make you into many, many short...' small streams. And immediately, Yamunā realized her position and who Balarāma was, and she just appeared there in a very humble state of mind, and just asked for forgiveness. So, it's 9:00, so, just something about Lord Balarāma, there is unlimited things we can say, and we are just so fortunate we have this intimate knowledge about who He is, that supreme personality of Godhead, the first expansion. Who is just, most enthusiastic devotee of the Lord, just simply want to serve Kṛṣṇa. That's, that's His life. Simply want to serve Kṛṣṇa. And the guru is His representative, and we can take shelter of sādhu-guru, like Śrīla Prabhupāda, and in this way, we can also be connected to Lord Balarāma. And Balarāma gives us spiritual strength, transcendental strength. Thank you very much. Śrī Balarāmadev kī jaya! Śrī Balarām kī jaya! Hare Kṛṣṇa.
